Mathematics - Home

Mathematics is one of the oldest branches of learning in the history of the human race. As we become interested in Mathematics we find that it deepens our souls and the understanding of the universe in which we find ourselves.
In the mathematics department we work with the students to develop enquiring minds, demonstrating how mathematics is part of the world and how a greater understanding of the subject can enhance lives.

The Maths Department

The Curriculum Area is now growing in strength, with the appointment of a skilled and determined leader who, by utilising the new two tier curriculum and having a positive, no-nonsense approach, aims to increase the levels achieved in mathematics by all students at Sandy Upper School.
The Curriculum Area Leader, Mr R Goddard along with four full time members of staff and one part time, teach mathematics at Sandy Upper School.
Several of the staff in the department have management experience and one is the Key Stage Manager for Year 9.
All staff teaching in the department from September 2006 will teach maths exclusively.

Accommodation

The mathematics department is housed in a suite of rooms and an office on the first floor of the building. Adjacent to the suite is one computer room for ICT input, extended by a bank of laptops. Classrooms are also equipped with a data projectors for use with staff laptops.

Schemes of Work

Schemes of work have been specially constructed to help the students study their Mathematics. Each scheme has been designed to break the subject down into simple easy steps, allowing the students to understand the subject to a greater level. These are available via the following link.

Homework and Assessment

Mathematics has had difficulty in the past with homework and students meeting deadlines. Because of this we have arranged to have all homework, for the whole academic year, available online with the deadlines attached. Arrangements for hard copies can be made if access to ICT is difficult, but with home Internet access becoming the norm, we will now also accept work sent in by email. Because of this provision, after school sessions have been arranged for those that miss their deadlines, so that pupils can then catch up with this very important area of the curriculum.
Other assessment will be in regular tests as we progress through the curricula. Each assessment will give the opportunity for high achievers to progress to the next level and give the chance for those that need to study at a steadier pace to have the chance to do so in smaller classes pupils of similar ability.
We are providing this competitive edge to the subject in a drive for excellent results from all pupils.
