You will study three units of work in Year
12.
Leisure and recreation affects everyone’s
life. The leisure and recreation industry is one of the fastest
growing industries in the UK .
This unit offers an overarching understanding
of the dynamic UK leisure and recreation industry. You will investigate
the key factors that contribute to its rapid growth since the
1960s. You will research the structure and scale of today’s
UK leisure and recreation industry, and learn that it is made
up of many public, private and voluntary organisations that interact
to supply an enormous range of products and services to consumers.
You will investigate the wide range of career
opportunities available in leisure and recreation so that you
can identify possible employment opportunities that match your
aspirations, skills and abilities.
The unit supports the more detailed study of
the leisure and recreation industry that you will carry out in
other parts of your AVCE.
Unit
2 – Safe Working Practices in the Leisure and Recreation
Industry
Safe working cannot be ignored in today’s
leisure and recreation industry. All organisations, whether large
or small, must provide a safe environment for staff and customers.
This is both a legal requirement and essential commercial sense.
In this unit, you will learn about the laws and regulations that
all leisure and recreation organisations have to follow.
You will investigate how hazards can be kept
to a minimum, how leisure and recreation organisations tackle their
health, safety and security responsibilities and how management
teams plan carefully to ensure a safe and secure environment for
staff and visitors, using regular inspections, following correct
procedures and staff training.
You will find out how risk assessments
must be carried out and the important part they play in health
and safety management.
Sport in big business. The industry has a complex
structure, a large turnover, and an impact on many people’s
lives through the media as well as participation. In this unit
you will investigate the structure, economic impact, organisation
and funding of the sports industry as well as current trends in
sport and the relationship between sport and the mass media.
You will study three units of work in Year 13
.
In this unit you will investigate the marketing
process and the way in which it can help leisure and recreation
enterprises achieve their objectives, financial or otherwise.
You will find that marketing is a continuous process that involves
anticipating and identifying customers’ needs, and then
supplying products and services to meet these needs.
You will investigate the part that market research plays in identifying
customer needs and then consider the main marketing communications
used by organisations to make customers aware of their products
and services
In the highly competitive leisure and recreation
industry there are many organisations providing similar products
or services and it is often the quality of customer service that
distinguishes one from another. Customers expect the highest standards
and it is important that all staff are aware of the part they
play in giving customers want they need. Giving excellent customer
service plays and important part in helping organisations keep
existing customers and attract new ones and is critical to commercial
success.
In this unit you will find out why customer service is so important
in leisure and recreation. You will learn about the part that
personal presentation and communication skills play in dealing
successfully with different customers have very different needs.
You will learn to handle complaints, an essential part of customer
service. You will also measure, monitor, and evaluate customer
service procedures and practices.
The unit gives you the chance to gain practical skills, knowledge
and understanding that you can put to good use in many other units
in your AVCE.
