Options/curriculum

A qualification in ICT will open doors in both an academic or career based pathway. All areas of employment demand ever-increasing ICT skills to be held by its members. Our curriculum equips all students with the skills to use ICT effectively in the twenty-first century.

Year 9 (Key Stage 3)

Since September 2011, all year 9 students undertake a series of lessons based on the GCSE Business and Communications Systems syllabus. This is taught as an alternative to the standard KS3 syllabus which is normally delivered to year 9 students. This gives the opportunity for a small number of students to undertake the full examination and gain an accredited GCSE at the end of year 9

Years 10 & 11 (Key Stage 4)

Edexcel’s BTEC Level 2 Certificate in IT is designed to provide a broad introduction to working in the IT industry and offer opportunities for accessing further study, such as a BTEC National qualification or an appropriate NVQ.

This curriculum has been developed to build on the work completed in year 9 and encourages students to progress towards a merit (B) or distinction (A) in BTEC ICT Certificate. This qualification is equivalent to two GCSE’s.

Students carry out a range of tasks that have been designed to recognise their achievements in a modern, practical way that is relevant to the workplace.

Students undertake tasks that enable them to work towards 3 units of work:

  • Using ICT to present information
  • Website development
  • ICT Graphics
  • Computer systems
  • Computer networking
  • Online business

Sixth Form (Key Stage 5)

In sixth form we offer the BTEC National Certificate IT Practitioners, equivalent to one A Level.  This gives students more advanced ICT skills in many different aspects of ICT, as well as preparing them for employment in the IT industry or more to higher education.

  • Communication & employability skills
  • Computer systems
  • Website production
  • Digital graphics and Computers
  • Computer animation
  • Computer networking
