Art & Design

The aim of the Art department is to stimulate and intellectually engage all students from Year's 9 to 13 in the subject of art.
We do this through practical application in the form of painting, printing and sculpting and we encourage the exploration of other artists work and the development of an individual's ideas.

Accommodation and Resources

We have three well equipped general purpose Art Studios with a separate textiles and print area, a Ceramics studio and a study area for sixth form A level and BTEC students.

  GCSE

The Edexcel GCSE Unendorsed Art course is a flexible one which allows candidates the opportunity to approach work in a variety of ways using a wide range of media, including Computer Graphics and some Ceramics and Sculpture.

Assessment is based upon two themes, in addition to one piece carried out during a ten-hour examination in Year 11.
Research and the ability to learn from existing art or design are important.
Sixth Form - AS / A level, AS and Advanced levels form a natural progression from GCSE.

Most students will approach their work from a broad Fine Art direction culminating in a final 8 hour practical examination.

This year in conjunction with modern languages the art dept is hoping to arrange a visit to Barcelona, but it is also important that students have sufficient interest in the subject to visit galleries and exhibitions of their own accord.

In the second year, candidates are able to focus more deeply into the relationship between some elements from existing art, and their own work, and to pursue specific aesthetic problems relevant to their own art. They complete a final 12 hour practical examination.

BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design

A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

It introduces students to the employment area they have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to more advanced work-related qualifications.
A BTEC Diploma Certificate is equivalent to four GCSEs grade A*- C
